What are the different/grades/levels of Stainless Steel
Raw material price fluctuations and increasing demand for stainless steels have driven demand for lower cost alloys as alternatives to the traditional “300” series steels.
This has been met through a range of existing and new, innovative steels with different properties, performance and availability. But as with the traditional stainless steels, you can’t tell what they are by looking at them.
This article describes a range of test methods available for grade confirmation. The method used depends on the budget, size of the job and the potential consequences of having the wrong alloy. Some of these tests are quantitative, giving actual percentages of each element, and others are qualitative tests showing just the presence of absence of an element or property.
Some tests are very portable and are ideal for on-site testing, but others require fully-equipped laboratories. The martensitic grades (high hardness, magnetic grades used for making knives and blades) are not considered in detail in this technical note.

Stainless Steel Maintenance and Cleaning
Stainless steels are often specified because of their attractive appearance, even though their main attributes are long service life, anti-microbial factors and low maintenance costs. But all materials – including stainless steels – may become stained in time by dirt, oil, grease, paint, etc. which may impair the overall impression.
Emery Industries Pty Ltd is a Clinell approved Supplier. Emery uses quality #304 Stainless Steel as a standard for all manufactured products.

Tea Stain – What It Is and How to Fix It
Tea staining of stainless steel is a relatively common occurrence, where the Australian Stainless Steel Development Association (ASSDA) has defined tea staining as the “discolouration of the surface of stainless steel which tends to follow the ‘grain’ of any surface finish”. The relationships between the contributing factors are complex, but generally become increasingly prevalent the closer the structure is to salty water or the local conditions are too harsh for the stainless steel grade used.
Although initially just a cosmetic issue, having no effect whatsoever on the structural integrity of the material, tea staining indicates corrosion. So, what are some of the contributing factors that cause this and how do you treat tea staining?
